Or do you wish to tease some more from the depths of this nightmare?
Even if it means my murder...
bloodborne
origins •
originally from cainhurst, maria was a distant relative to annalise, the queen of cainhurst. a skilled warrior, maria wielded a trick sword forged within cainhurst, naming her beloved weapon "rakuyo." capable of great dexterity whilst relying on her skill in place of the blood blades of the cainhurst nobles. in spite of the talent with blood usage, maria frowned upon their use, contrasting those around her. it's thought that her aversion to the blood arts may have been because using it caused one's essence to be eaten away. she trained her skills to be superior to the arts and it may be the reason that gehrman, the first hunter, was drawn to her in the first place. she had an admiration for him, a man whom worked with provost willem and his associates at byrgenwerth. in spite of her noble heritage, maria became a student of his and was among the first of the hunters.
• cause of the fall
under orders from provost willem, gehrman and maria were assigned to a small fishing hamlet near the coast. there was a rumour that the body of a great one known as kos had washed up on the floor. kos was worshiped by the villagers and as a result, they had grown grotesque and powerful. a valuable and unprecedented find for the byrgenwerth scholars. the body of a great one was finally within their grasp and it turned out, as it were, that kos was with child which would lead to a great one's umbilical cord. the cords were sought by provost willem to elevate his being and thoughts to those of a great one. he did so by lining his brain with eyes as he believed this to be the only way for man to match the greatness of the great ones. the hunters were thus sent to look for the cord, among them maria herself. she, along with the others present, raided and ransacked the village, murdering its occupants. their skulls were drilled into and searched for eyes.
shame and misery •
what followed is purely speculation. something occurred within the fishing hamlet, unknown as to what it was, the result was maria abandoning her beloved rakuyo. the sword symbolized all the choices made in her life that set her apart from her relatives in cainhurst. she could stomach the sword no longer and disposed of it within a dark well. the hunters had blasphemed against the great one and her unborn child when, supposedly, they retrieved the umbilical cord from kos which in turn caused the orphaned infant to die. this disturbed maria greatly and in her shame, she left the hunters and began anew within the grand cathedral as a caretaker for the healing church's research hall patients. she housed herself with the astral clocktower and went from then on as simply; "lady maria," and became something of a motherly figure to those ailing within the church.
• atonement
during this time, maria was assigned to oversee the cerebral patients as they imbibed water. they did so to listen for the howl of the sea which resulted in their heads expanding until that is all they were. the goal of these experiments was the hope to make contact with the great ones. not entirely unlike the experiments that resulted in the emissaries, these patients were created not to reach out to the great ones, just to listen so that they might absorb and assimilate the mutterings of the great ones. maria is thought to have joined the healing church as some means to self atone for the atrocities that took place at the fishing hamlet, as she disagreed with the callous nature of the church and the byrgenwerth researchers. she hoped to ease the suffering of the patients being experimented on, even if it might be only a small contribution to their relief. these experiments, however, were largely unsuccessful and many patients died during examination. their bodies were then cast into the corrosive acid lining the base of the Research Hall's spiral staircase, dissolving into oblivion. Unable to save them and reminded of her failures that took place outside her clocktower home, maria retreated into her tower and remained there, deciding to be silent and carry the healing church's dark secret herself, acting as their last line of defense for its discovery.
the end of it all •
over time, in her growing shame and despair, maria took her own life; slitting both a wrist and her throat. she died within the astral clocktower upon the chair she had sat in for so long, waiting to have to defend the church's heinous secrets. her death did not halt the research of the healing church but it did have a severe impact on gherman. it's then that his mania for maria truly took hold. it's implied that he must have been present to find her body as he took her hair pin with him and kept it close throughout the remaineder of his life as a keepsake. he thus created the doll in maria's image and, in some ways, the pair are connected as the doll is noted to react to certain things such as being gifted said hair pin. maria's seemingly lifeless body remains within the astral clocktower albeit located in the hunter's nightmare, a twisted and nightmarish version of the cathedral ward where terrors and blood-drunk hunters roam. she seemingly only exists therein and if approached, in spite of her long dead looking form, she will speak a fair warning that a corpse should be left well alone.
guilt is the source of sorrows, the avenging fiend that follows us behind with whips and stings.
